Obtaining GPS coordinates from a location in Google Maps

by Tom on January 27, 2009

Google maps is an invaluable tool, but there is always just that one more item to get it to do what you want. In my case I have a need to get the GPS reference a.k.a Latitude/Longitude of a placemark on a map. By default this information is not readily available. However, it turns out to be easy.

  1. Log in to Google Maps
  2. Navigate to My Maps
  3. Select the general map area you wish to work on
  4. Select the link “Browse the directory”
  5. Search for “Position Finder” and take the option to add it.
  6. Take the link back to My Maps
  7. Make sure “Position Finder” is checked.
  8. Click anywhere on the map and hey presto!

Next up will be my attempts to calculate elevation for a given placemark. Please add any comments you may have.
